The King Willem I Foundation has been awarded the King Willem I Award since 1958, in various categories. Since 2012, the Plaque for Sustainable Entrepreneurship. The Foundation aims to achieve a number of goals with these prizes:
Highlight the importance of sound and healthy entrepreneurship for the Dutch prosperity
Attention to positive developments in the Dutch economy
Enterprises reward their entrepreneurship
Strengthen mutual contacts between companies
Dare, diligence, sustainability and perseverance
Encourage creative and innovative entrepreneurship


The foundation is named after King Willem I (1772-1843), known for his trade spirit. During his reign (1814-1840) he took initiatives to restore economic prosperity, he founded trading companies and acted as an investor.
The King Willem I Foundation has a board consisting of directors who are involved in and having a sense of business. Her Majesty Queen Máxima is Honorary Chairman of the Foundation
