In this collection of heart-wrenching and life-affirming missions, we hear blow-by-blow descriptions of some of the most dramatic rescues from the last twenty years. Ik heb even een uitstapje gemaakt wat boek betreft, dit keer geen koninklijk boek, maar een boek dat ik van familie uit de UK heb toegestuurd gekregen “Surviving the Storms”. Een Engelstalig boek dus…
Een boek dat enkele verhalen vertelt van de redders van de zee. In dit geval de RNLI. ( Engelse Reddingsmaatschappij). Voor wie geen idee heeft : De Royal National Lifeboat Institution is de grootste reddingsbootdienst die actief is langs de kusten van het Verenigd Koninkrijk, de Republiek Ierland, de Kanaaleilanden en het eiland Man, evenals op sommige binnenwateren.
Het boek begint met een voorwoord van de Hertog van Kent, beschermheer van RNLI. Het boek wordt vervolgd door de persoonlijke verhalen van de reddingwerkers. Ieder verhaal was vol drama, spanning en emotie en prachtig verteld in de woorden van de vrijwilligers. Het heeft mij een nog dieper respect voor de zee gegeven en ontzag voor de mannen en vrouwen die zichzelf in gevaar brengen om de levens van anderen te redden. En dat in een maatschappij waar het eigenlijk alleen maar ” ik, ik, Ik ” is. Mensen als deze reddingwerkers als ook de Nederlandse KNRM zijn echte helden.
Verder met het boek : Elk hoofdstuk behandelt een bijzonder gevaarlijke redding vanuit het perspectief van een van de bemanningsleden, waarvan velen nationale erkenning verdienen voor hun moed en vaardigheden. Surviving the Storms “ geeft dan ook een prima inzicht in het waarom en hoe RNLI-bemanning en strandwachten zich vrijwillig inzetten om levensreddende en gevaarlijke werkzaamheden uit te voeren.
Het laat zien wat er nodig is voor het werk dat achterblijft als de reddingsboot over de lanceerhelling glijdt en ze de zee opgaan bij weersomstandigheden waarin wij zouden schuilen. Het toont ook de gevaren waarmee de strandwachten worden geconfronteerd wanneer ze worden opgeroepen om mensen van het strand te redden. Er is ook een slachtoffer die vertelt van hoe het is om in gevaar te zijn en de opluchting wanneer de mannen en vrouwen in het geel arriveren.
Samenvatting : Dit boek is een interessante compilatie van verhalen van RNLI-teamleden (en een reddingsslachtoffer) die het geweldige werk demonstreren dat de RNLI doet. Als je enige interesse hebt in de Royal National Lifeboat Institution en haar activiteiten, dan is dit zeker een boek voor jou.

A book that tells some stories of the saviors of the sea. In this case the RNLI. (English Rescue Society). For those who have no idea: The Royal National Lifeboat Institution is the largest lifeboat service operating along the coasts of the United Kingdom, the Republic of Ireland, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man, as well as some inland waterways.
The book begins with a foreword by the Duke of Kent, patron of the RNLI. The book continues with the personal stories of the rescuers. Each story was full of drama, tension and emotion and beautifully told in the words of the volunteers. It has given me an even deeper respect for the sea and awe for the men and women who put themselves in danger to save the lives of others. And that in a society where it is really just “me, me, me”. People like these rescue workers and the Dutch KNRM are real heroes.
Continuing the book: Each chapter covers a particularly dangerous rescue from the perspective of one of the crew, many of whom earn national recognition for their bravery and skills. Surviving the Storms “provides an excellent insight into why and how RNLI crew and lifeguards volunteer to carry out life-saving and dangerous work.
It shows what is required of the work left behind when the lifeboat slides over the launch ramp and they head out to sea in weather conditions that would leave us sheltering in place. It also shows the dangers lifeguards face when they are called to rescue people from the beach. There is also a victim who talks about what it is like to be in danger and the relief when the men and women in yellow arrive.
Summary : This book is an interesting compilation of stories from RNLI team members (and a rescue victim) who demonstrate the great work that the RNLI does. If you have any interest in the Royal National Lifeboat Institution and its activities then this is definitely a book for you.
